We had real great fun and genuine fellowship at the Singapore hub during the Global Enterprise Challenge 2011.

On April 12th 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space.

To commemorate this momentus event in human history, the international space community has launched an international competition for schools.

Your challenge today is to conceptualise and design an interactive exhibit for display in science museums around the world, celebrating 50 years of human spaceflight, and looking ahead to the next 50.

Estimate what it will cost to develop your exhibit, and produce a business plan to recover the cost of creating and maintaining the exhibit.

The Challenge is….

Mobility is an essential activity in our everyday life that we often take for granted.

In many countries around the world, there are disabled people and the elderly who are challenged to have mobility in their daily activities.

Today, new technologies in robotics, electronics, communications and etc can help the disabled and elderly people to gain back their mobility.

Your Challenge today is to develop a commercially viable product or services to help alleviate mobility issues faced by the disabled and/or elderly people in your country

The application for participants to the Asian Science Enterprise Challenge is now open!

In 2011, the GEC will be preceded by the Asian Science Enterprise Challenge (ASEC) from 28-29 May 2011, where the challenge will be issued by an MIT professor. The winners of ASEC 2011 will have the opportunity to represent Singapore in the GEC. The winners will also be trained in preparation for the GEC event.

Singapore will function as an asian  hub for the GEC. We will be opening to participants teams from other  asian countries and beyond to join us during the GEC time to compete together. Mr NS Somashekhar is a seasoned Investment Principal and strategist for B2B (business-to-business) and G2G (government-to-government) partnerships & New ventures. He is an information communication industry professional with more then 18 years of diverse leadership experience in promoting entrepreneurship and nurturing companies by providing investments and grants for ICT companies  in Singapore. He managed the Internationalization  & Industry Development Group  at  iDA (Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore) which is under MICA (Ministry of Information, Communication and The Arts). Government of Singapore.  Currently, managing Group Corporate Marketing at Singapore Technologies Electronics.

Mr Soma is an exceptionally skilled communicator, adept at establishing and maintaining networks with top-level executives and providing key advice to industry leaders. He has a record of successes in broadband and digital media, e-governance, and public & private business partnerships & advice budding entrepreneurs at INSEAD Singapore.

Mr Soma has an MS in Computer Applications and an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management (MIT Sloan Fellows Program in Innovation and Global Leadership) and took programs at Harvard Business School & John F Kennedy School of Government as part of his MBA program.

Jeffery Lim

Jeff is a man with many “cores”. While his main “core” is in IT, he has dabbled in various entrepreneurial adventures along the way in his journey – including (to his surprise) being involved in a coffee joint. He currently provides IT and system administration services, and chances are, you will be familiar with at least one of his clients. He is currently working on his own startup on the side.

Chew Weng Huat

Weng Huat is a registered architect and urban planner, with 25 years experience/consultancy practice. He has been involved in an Ecological Master Plan (for the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco City), soon to be built in the Northern Sector, involving cleantech and renewable energy. His entry  for the redevelopment of HDB’s Defu Estate won the design competition. He assisted in the development of the “One-North” area at Buona Vista, encompassing Biopolis & Fusionopolis.

29 May 2010 | The Challenge

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization some 13 million hectares of the world’s forests are lost every year, including 6 million hectares of primary forests. Primary forests — forests with no visible signs of past or present human activities — are considered the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet. Besides wiping out biodiversity, deforestation contributes about 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The main causes of deforestation include cutting timber to construct houses and furniture, and make paper.

Your challenge today is to design a product or process that will significantly reduce the use of timber in one or more of these areas: housing construction; furniture; or paper.  You will need to create a business plan for your product, and a 3-D model to be shown to potential investors.

In addition, your design will also need to educate the public – especially young people — about the benefits of your product.  Therefore, your 3-D model will later be donated to the local science museum as an exhibit, helping children learn how your product or process contributes to reducing deforestation and/or greenhouse gas emissions.
